The Earth’s atmosphere consists of an incredibly precise and delicate balance of gases that allows life to exist. Yet despite humanity’s reliance on this life-support, we voluntarily emit particulate matter and gases that are toxic and damaging to the atmosphere.
Sea transportation is a key component of the globalised economy with over 90% of the world’s trade carried by sea. Air pollution continues to increase as the sector grows. Shipping emissions are predicted to increase between 50% and 250% by 2050 – depending on future economic and energy developments.
Air pollution from international shipping accounts approximately for 50,000 premature deaths per year in Europe, at an annual cost to society of more than €58 billion. In the atmosphere, SOx leads to acid rain which harms crops, forests and aquatic species and contributes to the acidification of the oceans. Acid gas reduction is crucial for mitigating environmental damage and rebuilding the world’s energy infrastructure.
At Daphne Technology we contribute to the transition to a circular economy and to renewable energy systems which lead to significant reduction of GHG emissions.
A circular economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. A smart circular system includes reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling to create a closed system, minimising resources input and the creation of waste, pollution and emissions.
Circular economy is founded on three principles:

- Regenerate natural systems
- Keep products and materials in use
